Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES)
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) increase a child’s risk for long-term problems in mental, physical, & emotional health. These experiences include:

family violence
-
physical, emotional, sexual abuse, & neglect
-
parental substance abuse, incarceration, & mental illness
-
parental divorce or separation
In 2023, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported that in 2021, 38.3% of children living in Illinois experienced at least one adverse event, and 15.5% experienced at least two.
